Wilderness Forever Photo Contest
SIGNED INTO LAW in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Wilderness Act was a triumph for all who enjoy the open landscapes of America and the natural heritage they represent.
Today, more than 100 million acres are protected by the National Wilderness Preservation System to ensure these areas remain ecologically sound and environmentally pristine and for future generations.
In 2014, the Wilderness Act will reach its Golden Anniversary. In tribute to this milestone, Wilderness50—a coalition of government agencies, nonprofit groups, foundations, and other supporters—have joined together to celebrate the 50-year mark through numerous educational events, including the “Wilderness Forever” nationwide photography competition and print exhibition at the Smithsonian.
Entry Categories are as follows:
• SCENIC LANDSCAPE: Dramatic scenes and unusual perspectives of protected wilderness land, providing expansive views, including plant life: flowers, trees, and other flora in natural habitat. Close-ups, wide open spaces, storms, sunsets, and other natural views.
• WILDLIFE: Wild animals (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, etc.) photographed within the boundaries of wilderness areas. Animal portraits, behavior, predation, adults with young. (NOTE: No captive animals allowed in this category.)
• PEOPLE IN WILDERNESS: People enjoying wilderness lands: Adventurers, backpackers, hikers, canoers and other activities; groups, families, and individuals in natural settings. Action, artistic perspectives and artistic compositions (silhouettes, motion shots, creative lighting, portrayals of solitude and primitive recreation etc.)
• MOST INSPIRATIONAL MOMENT: Images of wilderness locations that have a very special story and personal meaning to entrants.
This nationwide call for entries seeks your best photos and personal stories and experiences within America’s protected wilderness areas
Contest Prize & TERMS
In addition, all winning images will be published in a special publication produced to commemorate this golden anniversary event and promoted nationwide through other electronic, print, and event promotions.
Each of the four contest categories will have a Pro, Amateur, and Student winner, plus Honorable Mentions ELIGIBILITY: United States / taken in/of a legislatively-designated wilderness area Not eligible to enter? - Find contest where you are.
COPYRIGHT: Entrants retain ownership of their photographs. USAGE RIGHTS: By entering the Contest, you hereby grant to each Party a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to publically display, reproduce, distribute, modify, transmit, and sublicense the photographs submitted for the Contest in any manner related to the Contest, including all associated reproduction, distribution, derivative works and commercial and non-commercial use in all media now known or hereafter invented, including, but not limited to: Wilderness50 and Wilderness50 coalition partner websites, social media channels, blogs, presentations, brochures, newsletters, articles, calendars, and other printed or digital publications; Nature’s Best Photography publications and all Nature’s Best websites and blogs, print and digital presentations, brochures, newsletters, articles, calendars, and published works related to the Contest; solicitations by Wilderness50 and Nature’s Best for the Contest; promotions and ongoing communications in connection with the Contest; and physical and digital galleries and exhibitions of all submissions for, and winners of, the Contest, including, but not limited to; exhibitions of Contest submissions and/or winners displayed at the Smithsonian NMNH, government centers, conferences, trade shows, and Contest sponsor offices. This license shall remain in place for a term of 5-years (2018) without further compensation, notification, or permission, unless prohibited by law.
