Travel Photographer of the Year
TPOTY is the photo contest that’s run by photographers for photographers. It’s open to photographers from all countries; amateur or professional, beginner or expert, young or old, we have categories to suit you all!
And it’s judged by leading photography experts and offers fantastic prizes from our very supportive sponsors, including travel adventures, photographic equipment and paid commissions (including one for Condé Nast Traveller magazine) and photographic tuition. And 2012 sees the launch of the Cutty Sark Award, an outstanding prize for the overall winner of Travel Photographer of the Year, presented by Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky.
Portfolios: Portfolios are compromised of four (4) related images.
Condé Nast Traveller Award: Entries for this category are portfolios of six (6) related images which tell a story.
New Talent Portfolio: For anyone aspiring to make a career in photography, New Talent is the category for you. Entries for this category are portfolios of six (6) related images which tell a story.
One Shot : One Shot is a single image category and is open to anyone
First Shot: First Shot is a single image category for less experienced or accomplished photographers. This category is only open to amateur photographers using basic SLR cameras, compact cameras or mobile phone.
HD Video – Travel Shorts : Short films shot in HD on a digital stills camera. Entries for this category are by DVD and post only.
Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2012: This special award is only open to younger entrants, aged 18 years and under at the closing date. Entries are divided into two age groups; 14 years old & under, 15 to 18 years old. All entries for this category are portfolios of four (4) images.
Judges’ Special Award: Young Photographers’ Alliance award for the best emerging talent. This award will be given by the judges to the most interesting, creative and original entry from a photographer, aged 25 years and under, in either the New Talent or Young Travel Photographer of the Year categories.
Travel Photographer of the Year 2012 – the Cutty Sark Award: The Travel Photographer of the Year 2012 will be the photographer who is judged to have submitted the best images in at least two of the portfolio categories – People Watching, Wild Planet and Journeys.
Contest Prize & TERMS
Three portfolio categories: People Watching: prize – Tselana Travel trip to two to the Greek Islands, staying in 5-star boutique hotels. Wild Planet: prize: nine-day tailor-made tour of Kenya with Explore. Journeys: prize – Fujifilm Xpro 1 body, camera case and 18mm, 35mm and 60mm lenses.
Judges’ Best Single Image winner in each of the portfolio categories wins 24” exhibition print from Genesis Digital plus an archive print from the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).
Runner-up in each portfolio category wins leather portfolio case or iFolio (iPad case) from Plastic Sandwich plus a Digimarc for Images Professional Edition.
Condé Nast Traveller Award – ‘Celebration’: prize – a paid commission to go on assignment with the magazine.
New Talent – Another World - prize: trip to Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira, Morocco with Tribes Travel, Fujifilm FinePix X100 camera, Plastic Sandwich leather portfolio book or iFolio, plus a Digimarc for Images Professional Edition.
HD Video category - Travel Shorts: prize - £1,000 from Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky.
Two single image categories: One Shot, Water: prize - Fujifilm X10 camera First Shot, Big City (beginners’ category): prize - Fujifilm FinePix XP150 camera, Photo Iconic photocourse.
Young Travel Photographer of the Year – Places & Faces: prize - Fujifilm FinePix XP150 for the winners of 14 and under and 15-18 age groups. Overall Young TPOTY winner’s prize - Fujifilm X-S1 camera.
Young Photographers Alliance Emerging Talent award: prize - place on the YPA mentoring scheme, or YPA portfolio review. ELIGIBILITY: Worldwide Not eligible to enter? - Find contest where you are.
COPYRIGHT: TPOTY does not make any claim whatsoever on the copyright of YOUR images. The copyright will, at all times, be respected by TPOTY and retained by the photographer. USAGE RIGHTS: Where an image or images are reproduced by TPOTY, the photographer will be credited. The organisers and sponsors reserve the right to free reproduction and exhibition of entered images in all media, but only in connection with these awards.
A selection of the winning and other best images will be reproduced in TPOTY portfolio books. These books are currently produced every two-three years and cover two-three years of competition entries. For compilation books exceeding this period TPOTY will seek the permission and agreement from all selected photographers before inclusion of their image(s). We do not claim unlimited licence for TPOTY or its sponsors to reproduce your images outside of the terms set out above. Where image reproduction is unrelated to the awards then permission and a fee will be agreed with the photographer in advance.
