Umencia Portrait Photo Contest

The Society of Biology 2014 Photo Contest

Society of Biology 2014 Photo Contest The Society of Biology 2014 Photo Contest is now open for entries. This years’ theme – Home, habitat & shelter – invites amateur photographers to think creatively about the unique ways animals, plants and organisms exploit their environment in order to survive. Photographs could focus on biology research which helps to answer the complex question of why and how different organisms survive in diverse environments; or, could simply capture the beauty of an animal in its natural environment.

This may be an orca whale in the cold coastal waters of the polar regions; or a parasitic worm that settles within the gut of another organism. Your photograph could give insight to the laborious task a beaver undertakes to build its dam, or the resourceful dormancy of the fat-tailed dwarf lemur. We hope this years’ theme will inspire insight into biodiversity, conservation issues and genetic diversity.

We are also welcoming entries that explore this theme at the molecular or sub-cellular level, illustrating the complex physiology or genetic factors that influence survival instinct and habitat selection. These could be biomedical images or photomicrography using any type of light microscope techniques, including: darkfield, brightfield, two-photon fluorescence or confocal imaging.
