Science without Borders® Challenge
The Science without Borders® Challenge was created to get students and teachers more involved and interested in ocean conservation through various forms of art. This yearly contest inspires students to be creative while using different types of media to promote public awareness of the need to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources; thus, contributing to the overarching goals of the Foundation.
The theme for this year’s Science without Borders® Challenge is ‘Reef Relationships.’
Coral reefs are important ecosystems that harbor nearly 25% of all marine species. There are many different types of relationships that take place in the coral reef ecosystem. One of these relationships is called symbiosis. Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species.
There are different types of symbiotic relationships including commensalism, mutualism, and parasitism, On the front cover, for example, the anemone and clownfish are engaged in a mutualistic symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit from each other.
For this year’s Challenge, the artwork should creatively portray one or more reef relationship(s).
