ROAD Photo Competition
“ROAD” a photo competition and exhibition to be judged and curated by W.M. Hunt, a well-known collector, curator and consultant based in New York City. “ROAD” is meant to include a wide range of photographs from landscape to portraiture, anything that suggests a journey.
This is an open call for entries of photo-based works made by artists who feel their work reflects the theme in some way. Mr. Hunt is looking for fresh, fully considered photographs. The resulting exhibition is intended to include at least 30 artists. Mr. Hunt feels that the history of photography is full of “road” pictures and that they take many forms. The road can be personal: a psychological or spiritual passage. Or it can be literal. The range is from transcendence to travel. It can take place in your head or in your backyard or in your car.
Dorothea Lange’s “The Road West, New Mexico”, 1938, and Robert Frank’s “US 285 New Mexico”, 1955-58, are classic black and white examples of the wide open, empty road. Not to leave people out of this, the earliest photograph of a person is “Boulevard du Temple” taken by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre in 1838 in Paris. As important as its showing a street is the 10 minutes – the length of time – it took to make the exposure. Time can be “the road”.
Hunt is looking for imaginative responses to the theme. He is the author of “The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious” published last fall by Aperture. In keeping with the gallery’s mission “to exhibit artists who are worthy of appreciation, to show images which will inspire and excite”, he is looking for work that will excite and inspire him. He enjoys new talent. He asks that you amaze and delight him, and that you join us for this “Road Trip”
“Where does this road go? Been livin’ here all my life, it ain’t gone nowhere yet.” (Old joke and lyric to Michelle Shocked’s “Arkansas Traveler)”
