RHS Photographer of the Year 2014

rhslogo With more and more people taking photographs – either with a dedicated camera, a smartphone or tablet – the RHS is encouraging you to submit your best photos of the natural world for a chance to become the RHS Photographer of the Year 2014.

Perhaps you enjoy moving in close to reveal the often-hidden beauty deep within a flower, or prefer to find a vantage point from where to shoot a wide-angle view of a garden; maybe you love showing wildlife in its native habitat, or endeavour to encapsulate the beauty of a season in one glorious shot – we have categories that will match your passion.

Adult photographers may enter as many images in as many categories as they wish. The RHS Photographer of the Year award is chosen from the winners of each of the categories:

• Plants: Plant portraits should show the plant, tree or shrub as a whole or near whole entity. For example a photograph could include the flower, stem and leaves of one single plant or show a clump of a specific species in its natural environment. If you wish to submit close-ups or macro shots, please enter these into the Abstracts and Details category.

• Abstracts and Details: This could be a close-up of a plant or an abstract view of plants or gardens. This category allows the photographer to demonstrate their own creativity and originality by selecting and creating a unique piece of photographic art.

• Celebrating Gardens: This category has a wide remit allowing several interpretations. You could choose to shoot a beautiful garden view, perhaps at dawn, or sunset to show the beauty of the light; alternatively you could capture a great shot of people enjoying their garden during a social gathering. Let your imagination be your guide, and show us what you love about your garden or those you visit.

• Seasons: Photographs submitted in this category should leave no doubt as to which season is being depicted. Frost, snow and ice all say winter, while in spring the fresh colours of pink, yellow and green usually predominate. Through the saturated, blowsy colours of summer to the mellow mists of autumn, we want to see what the seasons say to you.

• Wildlife: This category allows you to enter your best photographs of insects, birds and creatures found wild in your garden or in their native environment. You may wish to focus on a creature’s interaction with plants, or reveal an aspect of their natural behaviour.

RHS Young Photographer of the Year

These categories are especially for children and young people aged under 18. It is from these submissions that the RHS Young Photographer of the Year will be chosen:

• Young Photographer (age 11-17): A maximum of three photos can be entered depicting something plant, garden or wildlife related that interests you, and which makes an interesting picture.

• Children’s Photographer (under 11): A maximum of three photos can be entered depicting something plant, garden or wildlife related that interests you, and which makes an interesting picture.

The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 by Sir Joseph Banks and John Wedgwood for the encouragement and improvement of the science, art and practice of horticulture. We held our first flower shows in 1820, were granted a Royal Charter in 1861 and acquired RHS Garden Wisley, our flagship garden, in 1903. From our first meetings in a small room off London’s Piccadilly, we have grown to become the world’s largest gardening charity.

Today the RHS is committed to providing a voice for all gardeners. We are driven by a simple love of plants and a belief that gardeners make the world a better place. 209 years on we continue to safeguard and advance the science, art and practice of horticulture, creating displays that inspire people to garden. In all aspects of our work we help gardeners develop by sharing our knowledge of plants, gardens and the environment.
