PROOF Award for the Emerging Photojournalist
About the Award: PROOF knows that emerging photojournalists want to do meaningful projects related to human rights and social justice issues but oftentimes don’t have the funds or connections to do so. For this reason, we’re offering an award to help an emerging photojournalist jump start their project by providing funding and support from the media community.
For this award, we have put together a panel of judges including: Leora Kahn, Executive Director of PROOF, Ed Kashi of VII, Amy Yenkin from the Open Society Foundations, and Ann Friedman, Executive Editor of GOOD.
This award is for emerging photojournalists. For the purposes of this call for entries, the term “emerging photojournalist” is to be defined as a photojournalist who has an accomplished body of photojournalistic work that a.) has not yet been exhibited or published widely, b.) demonstrates a commitment to human rights and social justice issues, and c.) does not have agency representation. There are no age or geographic restrictions.
Each application should include the following:
– Statement of Purpose (maximum 500 words)
– Project proposal and budget summary (maximum 500 words)
– Portfolio of 10-12 photographs that demonstrate your commitment to human rights and social justice issues
– Resume or CV
– Application fee of USD $10.00 made payable to PROOF: Media for Social Justice
Contest Prize & TERMS
The final three candidates will have their work showcased through GOOD.
Second and third place finalists will also have the opportunity for a portfolio review with Jamie Wellford of Newsweek.
In addition to the financial award, the winner will also:
- Have the opportunity to directly submit their work to Ed Kashi for review, guidance and feedback, for a period of six months
- Have their work featured on PROOF’s website

COPYRIGHT: By applying, applicants agrees to these Rules and Conditions and warrants that his or her entry materials are original, do not infringe on any third party's rights, and that the applicant has obtained any necessary permission from any third party if a third party or any third party's property appears in the photograph USAGE RIGHTS: The award finalists grant an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide non-exclusive license to PROOF, to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the entries (along with a name credit) in connection with the award and promotion of the award, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to: Display at a potential exhibition of winners; publication of a book featuring select entries in the award; publication in GOOD magazine or online highlighting entries or winners of the award. Entrants consent to the Sponsor doing or omitting to do any act that would otherwise infringe the entrant's moral rights' in their entries. Display or publication of any entry on an Authorized Party's website does not indicate the entrant will be selected as a winner. Authorized Parties will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use. Additionally, by entering, each entrant grants to Authorized Parties the unrestricted right to use all statements made in connection with the award, and pictures or likenesses of award entrants, or choose not to do so, at their sole discretion.
