Spanning two centuries, night photography has captured the collective imagination of the masses. From the infamously long exposures required by early artists to high-speed color films and the advent of digital technology, the subject of the night has inspired an explosion of interest among contemporary artists. Natural vistas, celestial bodies, urban landscapes, factories, artificial structures, and nocturnal interludes represent but a few of the limitless subjects of nighttime photography.

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic works that explore the fundamental qualities that make night photography – from dusk to dawn – a compelling contemporary art form All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

JUROR | CORY FITZGERALD
Cory Fitzgerald is a photographer, educator, and entrepreneur. His work has been exhibited internationally. Cory earned his MFA at Rochester Institute of Technology in 2016. He currently lives in Arizona and runs a media company specializing in real estate.

ACCEPTANCE | AWARDS
At least fifty images will be selected by the juror for exhibition at Praxis Gallery. A Juror’s Choice, three Honorable Mentions, and a Directors Choice will be awarded and featured in the exhibition, the printed show catalog, and the online exhibit gallery. Juror’s Choice will receive free entry into three juried calls for entry of their choice and a complimentary exhibit book. Directors Choice will receive free entry into two juried calls for entry of their choice.

French novelist Georges Perec declared that we should found “an anthropology of the ordinary” as revolt against cultural and mass media exploitation of the exotic – the relentless parade of trauma elevated above the routine of everyday events. Perec’s revolt against the frenzy of trauma (the shameful, the voyeuristic and the spectacular) was to excessively document the ordinary in daily life, meticulously accounting for everything and anything in one’s immediate surroundings in an active attempt to uncover the unimportant and the insignificant.

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores the in-between moments of life and endeavours to notice the unnoticeable, the mundane, the banal and anti-climactic. “In giving value to the ordinary we, in turn, begin to value the space of our own identity and everyday ‘normal’ experience that lies outside of commodified and predefined trajectories of trauma exploitation. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

Guest Curator | Sarah Weiss
Sarah Weiss is the Project Director at Praxis Gallery | Photo Arts Center. She is also an artist, Educator, and co-founder of CollabArts Twincities. She completed her MFA in photography at Rochester Institute of Technology. Sarah has participated in several group & solo exhibitions and art organizations in the local arts communities of Rochester, NY; Milwaukee, WI; Glenview, IL and Minneapolis/Saint Paul, MN. Sarah is active in local critique and photobook groups. She contributes to the local arts community by creating exhibition opportunities through arts programing with the goal to help build an inclusive and energizing art community.

Curator’s Choice will receive free entry into three juried calls for entry of their choice and a complimentary exhibit book.

ENTRY FEE | $35.00
$35.00 for submission set of 5 images. $5.00 for each additional image. Praxis Members receive 10 images for the price of 5 images. International, all accepted.

COPY RIGHT & USAGE RIGHTS
Artist retains all copyrights to their own images. The artist’s name and photo title will be included wherever the photographs are displayed. Artists whose photographs are accepted for exhibition grant Praxis Gallery the nonexclusive right to use, print, and reproduce submitted digital files for the purpose of the exhibition, promoting the artist, promoting related programs and subsequent display on Praxis Gallery’s website, social media and online exhibition archives.
