Initiated in 2012, the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards celebrates the photobook’s contribution to the evolving narrative of photography, with three major categories: First PhotoBook, PhotoBook of the Year, and Photography Catalogue of the Year.

Contest Prize & TERMS

PRIZE DETAILS: The First PhotoBook Prize:
A $10,000 prize will be awarded to the photographer(s)/artist(s) whose first finished, publicly available photobook is judged to be the best of the year. Twenty books from this category will be selected for the shortlist, presented to the Jury for the final selection and exhibited during Paris Photo.

The PhotoBook of the Year Prize:
This prize will be awarded to the photographer(s)/artist(s), and publisher responsible, for the photobook judged to be the best of the year. Ten books from this category will be selected for the shortlist, presented to the Jury for the final selection and exhibited during Paris Photo.

The Photography Catalogue of the Year Prize:
Awarded to the publication, publisher, and/or organizing institution responsible for the exhibition catalogue or museum publication judged to be the best of the year. Five books from this category will be selected for the shortlist, presented to the Jury for the final selection and exhibited during Paris Photo.

The shortlisted books, accompanied by the jury’s comments, will be featured in the fall 2019 edition of The PhotoBook Review issue 017 (published by Aperture Foundation), to be released at Paris Photo.

Send your photobook(s) with your submission form(s) to Aperture Foundation in New York
You will need to provide the following information for each book submitted:

Book title, year of publication, and publisher information
A short description / summary of the book and why it’s being submitted that particular category
The photographer or author’s name, as well as the designer and editor’s names
Book dimensions (in inches and centimeters), number of pages, the edition number or print run
A short description of where the book is sold
An image or render of the book cover (JPG file)

Delivery of books:
All books must be received by Aperture’s New York office before September 13, 2019. This date does not include postmark. All entries must be physically received by this date and there will be no refunds if the books are not delivered on time. Books should be sent to:

Juror information:
The awards will be judged in two stages. An initial jury will meet in New York to select the shortlisted entries in both categories. The final winners will be decided by a separate jury that will meet in Paris immediately before Paris Photo begins. The initial jury will include representatives of both Paris Photo and Aperture Foundation, and the final jury will include neither. Each award winner will be chosen from the juried shortlist, all of which will be exhibited at Paris Photo. The fall 2019 issue of The PhotoBook Review (published by Aperture Foundation) will feature all of the shortlisted books. Following their display during Paris Photo, an exhibition of the thirty-five shortlisted books will travel to Aperture Gallery in New York and may be exhibited at other venues. COPYRIGHT: While copyright of all work submitted for these awards remains with the respective entrants, the entrant grants to Paris Photo and Aperture Foundation a worldwide, irrevocable, and perpetual license to reproduce representative examples of the submitted entries in any of their publications, websites, and/or in any promotional material, strictly in connection with the award, and with reference to the photographer(s)/artist(s) and publisher, as relevant in each case; and to exhibit the books entered anywhere in the world for public display. USAGE RIGHTS: The judges' decisions shall be final. No correspondence shall be entered into by either Paris Photo or Aperture Foundation, nor its representatives, regarding

Entries must be made by the photographer(s)/artist(s) responsible for the given book, by the publisher responsible for the given book, or by a third party acting with consent of the photographer(s)/artist(s).

Paris Photo and Aperture Foundation reserve the right to reject entries that are submitted without the required information, or that do not meet the criteria of eligibility, without any obligation to enter into any further discussion regarding their decisions, and without obligation to refund the entrant's entry fee.

Paris Photo and Aperture Foundation accept no responsibility for entries that are lost in transit.

Representatives of Paris Photo and Aperture Foundation are not available to review unsolicited materials received, except as entered via these awards.

Books published by Aperture Foundation or by Paris Photo are ineligible for entry.

The entrant acknowledges that should they be shortlisted for the award, and the Shortlist exhibition, they are willing to supply to Aperture Foundation or Paris Photo up to three extra copies of the shortlisted book, for display and presentation purposes.

Details of particular entries may be, at the discretion of Paris Photo and/or Aperture Foundation, released to the press as part of marketing the awards, including before the announcement of the awards.

Applicants warrant that the entry submission is the original work of the artist and, as such, the artist is the sole and exclusive owner and rights holder of the submitted work, and that the party submitting has the right to submit the work to these awards and grant all required licenses. Each entrant agrees not to submit any entry that (1) infringes any third party's proprietary rights, intellectual property rights, industrial property rights, personal or moral rights or any other rights, including without limitation, copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, privacy, publicity, or confidentiality obligations; and (2) otherwise violates the applicable state, federal, provincial, or local law.

No exceptions will be made for late submissions. Physical books, with submission summary forms, must arrive at Aperture Foundation in New York on or before the listed deadline. The postmark date does not qualify---the book must PHYSICALLY arrive at Aperture by the listed deadline.
