Papayago Rescue House, Inc. (PRH) is launching our annual photo contest in support of National Pet Bird Day on September 17, 2023. The contest aims to inspire, inform, and communicate love and life with captive parrots through a campaign of striking images. The competition is open to bird lovers, budding photographers, and those with a keen eye for an unique image.

The Competition Details:
Entries open: July 1, 2023
Entries close: Aug 1, 2023
Winners announced: 6th August 2023.
Theme: We are looking for striking, memorable, and unique images depicting parrots in captivity showing their “true colors”, interacting with their surroundings,
Category 1: The People’s Choice with the most votes. We’ll publish the winner and the runners-up in our August newsletter, 2024 calendar, photobook, and website.
The entry fee to enter is $5.00 for 1 picture for 5 for $20. $1 per vote.
Category 2: Growing up with a parrot. Open to young adults ages 13 through 18 years of age. Two winning images will be chosen from young adult photographers. We are asking young people to capture the essence of their relationship with a parrot (parrots do include budgies also known as parakeets, cockatiels, et al). In color or black and white.
The entry fees are $15 for one image, $30 for three images
Category 3: The world according to a captive parrot: Capture an image of what the world might look like to a pet bird. This can be in color or in black and white.

Category 4: Creatively Parrot: Abstract, creative with the tools, all to show the nuances of the captive parrot.

Category 5: Strike a pose: Capture an image of a parrot striking a pose, any pose, showing their natural beauty.

No birds should be compromised in any way, and photos should be taken in an ethical manner, without undertaking any unethical practices that cause any animal harm or distress. This includes birds with dogs, cats, and other animals. As we are advancing parrot welfare, no baby parrots should be used in the pictures. Birds should be in a harness or carrier if any outdoor pictures are taken.

 

Competition Guidelines:
The photographer must own the copyright to all images entered.
Submit Landscape or Portrait format images.
High-resolution images only.

Images must not have been digitally manipulated with the exception of the category: Creatively Parrot. For all other categories, this includes HDR frame stacking, stitched panoramas, images that have been manipulated by the addition, removal, or alteration (painting over, cloning, or blurring) of anything in the original subject and scene that were photographed, borders, signatures or watermarks, changes in color so significant that the processed colors are widely different from the original colors, changes in density, contrast, color and/or saturation levels and dodging and burning that significantly alter content by obscuring or eliminating information in the picture. Creatively Parrot images are free to use tools to achieve the desired outcome. No watermarks or borders should be used.

All images must be submitted electronically, ideally in JPEG format. You may be requested to resubmit a raw file within 3 days in order to advance in the judging process.

Only pet parrot (no pigeons, wild birds, passerines) photos.
Parrot welfare must not have been compromised in any way when taking the image. Images must have been taken in an ethical manner without causing parrot harm or distress. No baby parrot pictures.

Any entrant that contacts a judge (not the general photo contest email account) directly or indirectly, while the competition is open or during the judging phase may be disqualified.
To submit, send images to [email protected] with your full name, where the image was taken, the title of the photo, and a bit of information about the image and yourself.

EXCLUSIONS

Exclusion of images
If an image is submitted that does not comply with any rule of the Contest, the receiving panel will exclude the photo from the Contest and will delete it.
It must be considered that the RAW file and the original untouched high-resolution file corresponding to the photograph will be requested. Failure to submit the original file within the established deadlines will result in the disqualification of the photograph.
The failure to upload a brief introduction (maximum 800 characters) by the deadline specified in the call for entry into the second-round, results in the withdrawal of the entrant in the Contest.
If the receiving panel has to exclude all entries from a category, PRH makes no award in that category.

Exclusion of Entrants
Those Entrants will be excluded from the Contest who:
upload a photo that violates ethical principles
do not submit self-made photos
register with more than one username
PRH reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify and remove any entry that does not comply with the requirements laid out in the Contest Rules. If a breach has occurred, but is discovered after an award, then PRH may withdraw the relevant entry from any of the Exhibitions and/or related activity and require the return or reimbursement of any prize already received.
In connection with publishing the submitted photos, PRH and judges will indicate the full name of the entrant as the author and the entrant agrees.
