Open – 2018
With the beginning of a new year and the resumption of new Calls for Entry it seems appropriate to give our contributors a chance to choose their own best photos, regardless of subject or genre, to enter. Thus we’re calling this exhibition OPEN – 2018, a chance for you to choose your own photo genre. Whatever you most enjoy shooting or wherever you feel your strength as a photographer lies – be it landscapes, portraits, street photography, abstraction, still life, or any other of the myriad subjects one might choose – we want to see the work with which you choose to identify yourself.
In selecting your own photos, remember to be aware of the objective quality of your work. It’s easy to be so emotionally attached to an image that you don’t recognize the effect it will have on the objective viewer. If you’ve presented some of your photos in a critique you’ll have at least some feeling for the strong and weak points of any of those individual photos. It’s important to recognize the technical factors that create the “appearance” of your photos – exposure, cropping, focus, depth of focus, etc. Composition is another big factor – is the photo pleasing to the eye, does it follow the “rule of thirds”, are there objects or lines in the photo that confuse the eye or lead it to the wrong place(s)? But don’t be overly concerned with the “rules”. Thinking outside the box is often what makes for a striking photo image. Or, in the words of Pablo Picasso, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist”
