N.Y. Photo Curator Call for Entry Theme: ‘Diptychs’ curated by Ellen Wallenstein

N.Y. Photo Curator Call for Entry Theme: ‘Diptychs’ curated by Ellen Wallenstein

Wallenstein says, “In art history, “diptych” refers to paintings, especially: an altarpiece on two hinged panels that may be closed like a book, to protect the interior paintings. Diptychs also refer to ancient writing tablets consisting of two hinged leaves; they were generally small in size.

As a photographer and a book artist, I am very interested in pairings of photographs- Right and Left (Recto and Verso)- as seen on the page or on a wall. How does the left image enhance or change the meaning of the right image, and vice versa. How can they work to form a third image, which is more interesting or meaningful than the two separately?

My challenge to you here is to present pairs that work together in any or all of these manners- visually, intuitively, intellectually, physically. Please present them as one image -(thus, 3 submissions would contain 6 photographs.) I am looking forward to being surprised and delighted by the submissions.”

10% of artist entry fees goes to the curator’s choice of charity.

Wallenstein says, “The charity I have chosen to contribute to is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) a national organization that works in courts, legislatures and communities to defend individual rights, and whose work is to protect the enduring values of freedom and equality for all.”

Another 10% will go to the first place winner’s choice of charity.
