Mystic Seminars Origin Story
Mystic Seminars was originally a mini-conference held in Connecticut. The event was created for wedding photographers so that they could meet up, make new friends, grow their business, learn from each other, and most of all, it was a place where they could nerd out and party with like-minded people.
Over time, the conference expanded and began to include other types of photography, especially fine art and boudoir. The event moved to Portland Oregon, and became what it is today—a fun photography conference where “speakers, attendees, and sponsors interact on the same level.”
Programs and Speakers
Throughout the convention, you’ll be able to attend programs with speakers who will give advice from their own experience about how to balance the photography lifestyle, run a business, take amazing photos, make new connections, use the available technology in the best way possible, and be successful in doing what you love for money.
Here are a few programs from the directory that might peak your interest:
“P for Professional” by Erin & Ben Chrisman: At this seminar, Erin and Ben Chrisman, who have photograph weddings professionally all over the world, will share 25 proven tips that they’ve picked up over the past decade. Their program will focus on how to keep your business going while continuing to love what you do for a living.
“Meaningful Portraiture” by Ryan Muirhead: Ryan Muirhead is a portrait photographer who takes beautiful emotive photographs. As a professional, he emphasizes the importance of making a personal connection with the subject in order to create emotional portraiture. In this seminar, he will show you how to use film, natural light, and patience to make genuine, intimate images.
Untitled Seminar by Jen Rozenbaum: As a boudoir photographer, Jen Rozenbaum is a genius at making her female subjects look as good as they do in real life, if not better. She argues that the camera doesn’t add 10 pounds—the photographer does. Her seminar will cover advice for pose, lighting, and lens choices that will flatter every woman.
What People From Past Years Say About It
Here are some segments of quotes from the Mystic Seminar’s “Retrospect” page.
“Mystic Seminars feel more like a reunion of like-minded people you don’t know yet. … You will leave with direction.” –Parker J Pfister
“The collaboration with others, the technique shared by the speaker and the shared commonality broadens your knowledge and allows you to take in photography in a whole new light—whether for the first time or as a refresher on a longtime career.” —Dalisa and John Michael Cooper
“It’s a place where you learn from your favorite rockstar photographers and then you sit near them and listen to the next rockstar together. Instead of the attendees going out for a good time after, everyone goes out and it becomes a shared experience.” —Daylene Willson
