Once again, KL International Photoawards will be calling for entries for it’s 5th consecutive KLPA photography competition. The  KLPA website has fresh information about the exciting new 2013 Call, with it’s tagline as ‘Take me, Seriously’.

‘Take Me, Seriously’ attempts to recognise the tens of thousands of instant Smartphone images that are uploaded to social media on a daily basis, which is becoming increasingly mainstream in their importance in communication and the dissemination of ideas, fashion, lifestyle choices and news-making. Several notable image banks have of late been recognising this fact, and have published Smartphone Instagram images and also accepting submissions from this media.

Photographers from the world over will be able to submit their photographs in two categories :

1. PORTRAIT SINGLE – 1 to 8 images, stand alone portraits. The interpretation of what a portrait is, is very much up to the photographer, and in it’s widest sense, must incorporate the human dimension, ie. photography which concerns people with emphasis on their identity as individuals in relation to their surroundings, status and humanity.

2. SMARTPHONE APPS SERIES – 5 to 12 images, themed. The concept for this category is very much experimental, and photographers must utilise their smartphones to capture a series of between 5 and 12 images, that works as a cohesive story based on the theme of ‘1,000 Yards’. The images captured must be portraits – that are taken within 1,000 yards of their work or home. As a suggestion, these could be portraits of their local communities, local sports complex, high street, schools, playing fields, coffee shops, etc. Part of the concept in this category is ‘communication through photography’, using smartphones and apps like Instagram or Hipstamatic to create a viable and creatively thought out series of portraits.
