IFEX is launching the Impunity Exposed photography contest as part of the third annual International Day to End Impunity on 23 November. Deadline for entries is 3 November 2013. Journalists, photographers, musicians, writers, human rights defenders and others continue to be sued, threatened, attacked and even murdered with impunity in many countries simply for exercising their right to free expression. Use your camera to symbolically show the ways that impunity impacts freedom of expression.

Our favourite photos will be featured on the International Day to End Impunity Facebook page, and the top three winners will receive cash prizes and will be profiled on the campaign website. The contest is open to professional and amateur photographers wishing to show with creativity how a culture of impunity undermines freedom of expression.

Submissions should convey the impact of impunity on freedom of expression. Suggested themes are:

• The courage of those fighting impunity

• Activism, protests, and challenging injustice

• A culture of fear and silence

• Individuals targeted for exposing corruption, human rights violations, and organised crime, while the perpetrators go free

• Corruption, broken judicial systems and justice denied

Participants may submit more than one photo. Photographs taken by digital camera or any electronic devices are acceptable. Also accepted are scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographic prints. Minimal touch-ups on the photographs are accepted, but the submissions must be as close as possible to the original material.
