In the early days of photography, the 1830’s, photos were called by some “waking dreams”. There seemed to be magic involved – some believed the camera to be capable of capturing the soul of the subject. When photography became more commonplace later in the century people came to regard photography as an accurate depiction of reality: “A photograph never lies.” At the same time, fine art photographers were experimenting with the use of the camera to create images that clearly did not reflect “objective reality”. Since then, depicting dream states whether by intent or by serendipitous accident in photographs has become something of a subgenre. And yet nearly all of us have made photos that have a mysterious dream-like quality.In this exhibition, we’re looking for photos that illustrate a waking connection to the world of dreams. Whether by literal representation or by abstract interpretation, we’d like to see how you choose to picture dream states, either sweet dreams or nightmares- or something that’s both or neither
