Creative Railroad Photography Award

A Story In Three Photographs is the theme for the Center for Railroad Photography & Art’s 2011 Creative Photography Awards Program. The judge this year is Joseph Elliott, Department Head for Photography at Muhlenberg College and a contract photographer for the Library of Congress, Historic American Buildings Survey, and Historic American Engineering Record.

Entries should consist of three photographs, at least one of which will have been taken in 2007-2010, although there are no date restrictions for the other two images.

The theme encourages the photographer to assemble a group of three railroad-related photos linked by a narrative thread. It is not necessary to provide a written statement with the entry unless the artist wishes to do so. In fact, we encourage entries that stand by themselves without need for accompanying text. The story being told could be about an event depicted in the series, the illustration of a span of time, a creative interpretation of a single subject, the depiction of a worker’s day unfolding, a triptych or any set of three pictures that the photographer feels conveys the arc of a story. We hope the theme gets the creativity flowing and will get entrants to consider why they are photographing something and what it says to viewers.
