Chair Photo Contest
Many of us must have first memories of scooting from a festive throne, confident of toys. There is a Eugene Atget photograph of a lone chair out on a leaf strewn, heavy, balustraded Parisian veranda. There is a monument in Washington D.C. There is a story of Ulysses S. Grant trembling in Mathew Brady’s photography studio after a workman fell through a skylight and knocked him from his portrait chair. There are chairs for taking life and for blessing it. Jackie Kennedy sat smartly in chairs. Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp deciphered chairs. Warhol preferred stools. Mexican lovers move from sillas. Ed Sullivan watched a fellow and a lady balance each other on chairs. Ed Sullivan then let us all watch. Without chairs we would probably all eat at low tables. I sure miss my Granddad in his chair. My brother put one of my little dollhouse chairs in the gold fish bowl – the fish seemed to like it. I like chairs.
