JUROR: DAN BURKHOLDER. For many years, photography existed only in black and white. Photographers trained their eyes to look for elements of design, texture, and composition, and they learned to translate the world of color into one of light and shadow. With the advent of digital technology, many photographers are now working in both color and black and white, sometimes even with the same image.

Others still inhabit the chemical darkroom or use alternative processes to explore the nuances of black, white, and the delicate scale of gray in between. For this exhibition, we seek black and white photographs made with any technology. Juror Dan Burkholder will choose forty photographs for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from April 26th through May 21st. He will also choose an additional thirty-five photographs of these subjects for the gallery’s “On-Line Annex.” All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalogue available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.
