The UN Convention on Biological Diversity has three objectives: the conservation of biological diversity; the sustainable use of its components; and the equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilisation of genetic resources. The Convention is aiming to secure a significant reduction in the current rate of loss of biodiversity across the globe by 2010. To focus the world’s attention, the UN has designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity.

To celebrate this, the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland invites entries now from interested individuals to participate in the fourth ESAI photography competition. The theme for the competition is “Biodiversity: The original life support system”

Entries are welcome from all amateur photographers and will be assessed on the basis of picture quality, composition and the appropriateness of the caption.

First prize: €250 voucher for www.pixels.ie sponsored by the Environmental Research Institute.

One year membership of ESAI

Two runners up will each receive a one year membership of ESAI and have their photograph published in the Local Planet Magazine

The winner will be notified in November, 2009.
