‘The Figure in the Landscape’ curated by Diana H. Bloomfield
Bloomfield says, “In photography, we mostly see landscape images depicted as expansive and isolated vistas, either exotic or mundane. This genre of landscape photography, typically devoid of people, often suggests both the presence and absence of life in these seemingly desolate areas (ie, old fences, broken down cars, boarded up gas stations, lonesome telephone lines). Yet the human figure placed somewhere in the landscape stems from a long tradition, in painting and in photography. The inclusion of that figure alters the entire landscape and our relation to it. Full of creative possibilities, the figure in the landscape is often filled with mystery, sometimes totally incongruous in the landscape, or barely visible— meshing so well that the figure becomes one with his or her surroundings. I look forward to seeing your own visual narratives of the figure in a landscape of your choosing.”
20% of artist fees go to charity. 10% to the curator’s charity and 10% to the first place winner’s charity.
Bloomfield has chosen the Umstead Coalition, which works to ensure the preservation of the William B. Umstead NC State Park, which traces its history to the 1930’s and covers over 5,500 acres. Located in Wake County, North Carolina, hikers, trail runners, bikers, and equestrians use the extensive network of trails that surround three man-made lakes. Part of the East Coast Greenway, a 3,000 mile long system of trails connecting Maine to Florida, runs through the Park. http://umsteadcoalition.org/
