With over 150 million active users worldwide, it’s safe to say that Pinterest is not just a popular social media platform, but an important one at that.
Featuring information on every single topic you could think of, Pinterest acts as a platform which allows users to save ideas from around the web with the single click of a button. As a proclaimed “visual catalog of ideas”, Pinterest lets people organize their saved information as images, which they are then able to categorize into ‘boards’.
Whilst many might believe that the platform is only useful for saving inspiration, we’re going to bust this myth today and share everything you need to know about Pinterest as a photographer, along with the surprising benefits it possesses for you. Let’s get started!
What Boards Should You Have?
Once you’ve set up your very own Pinterest account (which can easily be done by following the steps on the homepage), it’s time to create your boards that you will soon be pinning (a.k.a saving) images to.
Alternatively, this advice is also important for those who already have a Pinterest account – even if they’ve been pinning away for years.
Pinterest might seem like fun and games, but if you’re using the platform as another social media profile for your photography business, then there are some important boards which are completely necessary for you to have in order to boost your success.
The first one is a board solely dedicated to showcasing your own photography. This should be the very first board on your profile (you can create one then drag it up to the beginning of the row) and it should only contain the photographs which you think perfectly sum-up your business. Don’t be afraid to place a tasteful watermark on these images, and be sure to create a description for each that includes your business name, your location, the genre of photography, and any other descriptive words which will make it easier for users to find the image in a keyword search.
Secondly, you’ll want to have boards which are relevant to your photography niche and act as supplementary information and inspiration for your potential clients. For example, if you specialize in weddings, then you should also include boards which showcase your favorite wedding looks for the bride and groom, perhaps one featuring idyllic wedding destinations, along with boards celebrating bridal hair and makeup and even wedding stationary. This boosts your authority within your niche (even though you’re simply curating other people’s images within these realms), and allows your Pinterest profile to act as a ‘one-stop shop’ for your clients. They’ll love you for that!
If you’re a fashion photographer, you might include other helpful and relevant boards such as those dedicated to posing tips, what to wear for a portrait session, or even a collection of your favorite fashion labels.

The Collaborative Moodboard
Pinterest is also excellent for photographers to use as a curated moodboard, as you can easily create boards dedicated to inspiring images, quotes, colors, textures and more, relating to a specific project.
If you’re planning a portrait session or other highly-collaborative shoot, you can also create a group board and invite your client(s) to contribute to it. This way, you can both save your own ideas and inspiration to the board to show what you have in mind for the session.
Use It As A Visual CV
Think about all of the important things you should include on your website or online portfolio, and then imagine ways that you can bring these to your Pinterest profile to act as a visual CV.
You can create images featuring testimonials from past clients and add all of these to their own dedicated board. You might also include a board solely featuring tear sheets or covers from publications your photography has been featured in. These things are not only impressive, but they also highlight your professionalism and talent to potential clients.
Make It Go Viral
Do you have a blog on your website where you regularly write about photography-related tips and tricks? You can easily promote these articles on Pinterest by creating a ‘pin-worthy graphic’, linking it your article, and sharing it on the platform in order to get it in front of a larger audience.
What is a pin-worthy image you ask? It’s simply an image that has been optimized for Pinterest, therefore increasing your chances of going viral. This means your image should be in vertical format (so it’s longer and therefore more noticeable in Pinterest’s grid), and you should use eye-catching colors, fonts, and headlines.
