Filter Photo is pleased to announce an open call for photographic work for a juried exhibition, Context 2015. This will be the inaugural exhibition for Filter Photo’s new gallery space at the Hubbard Streets Lofts, located in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. The exhibition will run from February 6th – March 27th, with an opening reception on February 6th. Context 2015 will be juried and curated by Michal Raz-Russo, Assistant Curator in the Department of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago.
A Juror’s choice award and honorable mention will be awarded. The Juror’s choice award comes with a $500 cash prize.
January 6th: Deadline for submissions
Mid-January: Entrants are notified of juror’s decision
January 31st: Accepted work must arrive at gallery
February 6th: Exhibition opens with a reception
March 27th: Exhibition closes
Juror and curator Michal Raz-Russo will consider all types of photographic work for this exhibition. She is interested in the full range of contemporary photography, and favors an open theme that allows for the widest range of possible entries.
About the Juror:
Michal Raz-Russo is the Assistant Curator in the Department of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. While at the Art Institute she has curated the exhibitions Sharp, Clear Pictures: Edward Steichen’s World War I and Condé Nast Years (2014), Dayanita Singh (2014), When Collecting was New: Photographs from the Robert A. Taub Collection (2013), Entre Nous: The Art of Claude Cahun (2012, organized by the Jeu de Paume, Paris), and The Three Graces (2011). Raz-Russo was a contributing author to Color Rush: American Color Photography from Stieglitz to Sherman (Aperture, 2013) and author of The Three Graces: Snapshots of Twentieth-Century Women (Yale University Press, 2011). She holds a BA in Architecture from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, and MAs in Art History and Arts Administration from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Raz-Russo is currently working on a biennial contemporary photography series that begins in fall 2015 at the Art Institute.
All types of photographic and time-based work will be considered, including video and GIFs. The entry fee for those with a Filter Photo Membership is $25 for up to 6 submissions. The entry fee for those without a Membership is $25 for 3 submissions with the option of $5 for each additional submission (max. 6 total). Digital files should be saved as JPEGs and sized at 72 dpi and 1000 pixels for the longest edge. All files must be titled with last name and first initial of the artist, plus the image number, (e.g. SmithJ1.jpg or DoeJ1.jpg.) Video and other types of moving image submissions must be provided via a working link for online viewing.
