The highly-acclaimed UK Picture Editors Guild Awards competition launched in 2010.
These awards are distinctive in that panels of judges consisting only of working picture editors from national and regional newspapers and international photo agencies assess the thousands of entries from professional photographers from throughout the media. Enthusiastic non-professionals also get an opportunity to have their work judged in their own category by the same top editors.
In 2010 the first-ever competition awarded thousands of pounds in prize money to the winners of eight categories with the overall accolade of Photographer of the Year going to the Guardian’s Martin Argles. Each year the Awards have evolved with a separate set of Awards introduced in 2012 specificallt for the London Olympics and this year will see the introduction of a video category for the first time.
Headline sponsors enabling the Guild to provide this unique opportunity to reward the very best in photo-journalism include telecom giant BT, British Airways, and Nikon, plus the media companies.
Entries for the Awards are submitted via this dedicated website, with video content uploaded via Vimeo, and then linked to the actual entry.
Alan Sparrow, UK Picture Editors’ Guild chairman, said: “We were thrilled with the many congratulations we received for the success of our first annual Awards. This is now the premier celebration of the skill and talent of British press photography – the most dynamic and competitive media workplace in the world.“
