2012 ECHO Int’l Photojournalism Student Competition

ECHOlogo Free press and freedom of expression: with Charlotte readying for the Democratic National Convention, The Echo Foundation, in partnership with The Charlotte Observer, proudly celebrates these ideals against the backdrop of this year’s national election with the launch of the 2012 ECHO International Photojournalism Student Competition. Acclaimed New York Times photographer, Tyler Hicks, will choose the competition winners.

Echo invites students worldwide who are committed to using their creative talents in service to humanity, to participate in this digital competition by responding with original photography to the questions: “What does democracy or tyranny look like?” or, “What does justice or injustice look like?”

Tyler Hicks will choose one Grand Prize Winner and up to four Awards of Merit winners from among the best submissions as determined by a panel of professional photographers.

Contest Prize & TERMS

PRIZE DETAILS: Grand Prize Winner – 2012 Echo International Student photojournalist will be invited to Charlotte during the Democratic National Convention (travel, food and housing provided) will have the opportunity to photograph for one day along-side, renowned photojournalist, Bill Eppridge, will attend the Gala Opening of the photojournalism exhibit, One America, One American: Robert F. Kennedy Through the Lens of Bill Eppridge, will be invited to attend the 15th Annual Echo Award Dinner during the Convention, will have their winning photograph printed, framed and hung in The Charlotte Observer Gallery as part of The Echo Foundation photojournalism exhibit, will have their winning photograph posted on The Echo Foundation and The Charlotte Observer websites and will have their winning photograph published in the Annual Report of The Echo Foundation

Awards of Merit Winner(s) will have their winning photograph printed, framed and hung in The Echo Foundation offices with recognition, will receive recognition as an Award of Merit winner in The Echo Foundation student photojournalism electronic slide show to be featured at the exhibit, One America, One American: Robert F. Kennedy Through the Lens of Bill Eppridge, will have their winning photograph posted on The Echo Foundation and The Charlotte Observer websites and will have their winning photograph published in the Annual Report of The Echo Foundation. COPYRIGHT: Each entrant retains the copyright to his/her Photograph(s) and Description(s). USAGE RIGHTS: Each entrant explicitly grants Sponsor, its licensees, affiliates and their designees (collectively, the “Authorized Parties”) an irrevocable, nonexclusive license for the duration of copyright to use each Photograph and Description for advertising, marketing, and promotional purposes, in any and all media now known or hereafter created, including but not limited to publication in books, catalogs, brochures, blogs, and websites, at Authorized Parties’ discretion, without additional consideration, notification, permission to entrant or any third party.

Any Photograph or Description used by The Echo Foundation shall carry the photographer’s credit line.
