Photo of the Year 2009
Photo of the Year is an amateur photography contest benefiting the Outdoor School in Portland, Oregon. Our contest provides a venue for amateur and professional photographers to gain exposure for their work while bringing together community members and businesses to support an important local outdoor education program.
2009 Photo Categories
We mix these up a bit each year by adding and eliminating one or two categories. This year we thought we’d be clever and add a category called “Camera Phone” since everyone has a mobile phone and many have cameras on them. And as usual, the winner of the Top 100 category will be crowned Photo of the Year 2009.
Top 100: Dramatic vistas, stunning flora and fauna, an artful picture of a door…you name it. Top 100 photos can be of just about anything (anything fit for family consumption, that is). As the name implies, 100 photos will compete against each other for the honored title of Photo of the Year 2007.
Faces: Who can forget Goat Boy from POTY 2005? Let’s see your best up close and personal photos. Good luck beating Goat Boy’s cuteness, though.
Camera Phone: These days, pretty much anyone with mobile phone in their pocket is armed with a camera. And some of those camera phones take respectable photos – ones you wouldn’t capture were it not for the quickdraw of the phone from your pocket. Send us these photos!
Youth: Any students out there with a strong attachment to your digital camera? This category is for photos taken by those 18 and under. Use that youthful imagination and make your mom proud. TEACHERS, say it with us, “Hmm…Photo of the Year…what a great addition to my curriculum…I should email the folks at POTY about submitting photos as a class!”
Professional: Okay Pros, now is your chance compete in Photo of the Year. The Photo of the Year will still go to an amateur photographer, but this category will showcase work done by the professional photographers out there. So send us your best
How does Photo of the Year work?
Photo of the Year is an annual event that runs through the fall and early winter each year. Photos are submitted via our web site and undergo a multi-stage judging process involving the public. The event culminates with a benefit Awards Gala, where the Photo of the Year is chosen and announced. The Awards Gala is held in late January in Portland, and includes photography, great local food, live music and the Awards Ceremony.
How does Photo of the Year raise money?
Photo of the Year raises money through photo submission fees, Awards Gala ticket sales, a silent auction and direct donations. Funds raised are donated to the E2 Foundation, which runs the Outdoor School Program. All contributions to Photo of the Year are tax-deductible through the E2 Foundation.
Who is eligible for Photo of the Year?
Our contest caters to all photographers, from the weekend hiker with a point and shoot camera to a professional category. We have had photographers of all ages and all parts of the world submit their work to our contest – and succeed.
What is the Outdoor School?
Founded in 1966, Outdoor School remains a vital component of our public education system. Each year, thousands of families count on the program to introduce their children to nature, ecology, the environment and natural resources. In addition, each year the Outdoor School Student Leader program gives more than 1,900 high school students unique leadership opportunities, which often lead to careers in science, sustainability, teaching and children’s services.
Who is Photo of the Year?
Photo of the Year is organized by a small group of local volunteers who have a passion for the outdoors, photography and supporting environmental education.
