Dog’s Adorable Maternity and Newborn Photos Go Viral

April 1, 2016

We often see heart-warming images from maternity sessions with mothers-to-be, their baby bump proudly on display, a flower gracing their hair. Newborn photo shoots have always been quite popular too, as a previously kicking and screaming baby is captured laying serenely on a soft blanket.

Now, imagine taking these concepts and applying them to the canine world. This is exactly what Brazilian portrait photographer Ana Paula Grillo did with a gorgeous Pinscher mix named Lilica.

Just over a week ago, Lilica’s maternity photos were showcased on the internet, only to go viral within minutes. Soon known as ‘The Pregnant Dog’, Lilica instantly became an internet sensation as she smiles warmly in each photograph with a beautiful red flower attached to her diamante collar.

So exactly who is this adorable Lilica, we hear you ask? The playful pup is Ana’s friend’s dog, so the talented photographer decided to snap some images of her before she was due to give birth.

It turns out that Ana planned the maternity session just in time, as the day after this 20-minute shoot, Lilica gave birth to five adorable puppies, including four boys and one girl.

Not one to miss this cute photo opportunity, Ana headed over to her friend’s house with her camera in-hand, ready to capture some stunning portraits of the newborns.

Unsurprisingly, these images have become another worldwide sensation, as the masses have tuned in to see the smiling and proud Lilica with her five tiny puppies – all of whom seem to have their mother’s photogenic genes.

Though he isn’t pictured, it turns out that the father of these pups is the (far shyer) dog who lives next door to Lilica. Romper writer Laura Hankin muses: “No word on if he and Lilica are in love, or if it was just a one-time thing.”

In the now-famous maternity photos, each dog (including Lilica) wears a little ribbon around its neck, with blue marking the male puppies and pink adorning each girl.

Ana is both surprised and grateful for how much attention her maternity and newborn sessions with Lilica have gained and it will be interesting to see what the future may hold for this creative photographer.

Perhaps she will go on to become the world’s leading canine photographer, capturing more unique maternity and newborn sessions? Maybe canine maternity and newborn sessions will now become a thing? Only time will tell…
