The 2012 World Press Photo Contest

worldpressphoto World Press Photo invites all press photographers and photojournalists around the world to participate in the 55th World Press Photo Contest. The annual Photo Contest is the largest contest in the world for professional press photographers and photojournalists. The 2012 World Press Photo Contest is now open for entries.

Categories:

Spot news – Single images (SN) or stories/portfolios (SNS) of unscheduled events for which no advance planning was possible. All images must have been shot in 2011.

General News – Single images (GN) or stories/portfolios (GNS) of planned or organized events. All images must have been shot in 2011.

People in the News – Single images (PN) or stories/portfolios (PNS) of people or groups of people featuring in the news. All images must have been shot in 2011.

Sports – Single images of sports action (SP) or sports feature stories/portfolios (SPS).

Contemporary Issues – Single feature images (CI) or stories/portfolios (CIS) exploring contemporary social issues, environmental issues, health issues, etc.

Daily Life – Single images (DL) or stories/portfolios (DLS) illustrating the richness and diversity of everyday life.

Portraits – Single images (PO) or stories/portfolios (POS) portraying people (groups and individuals), including public figures and celebrities.

Arts and Entertainment – Editorial reporting in single images (AE) or stories/portfolios (AES) of visual and performing arts, rituals, festivals, etc.

Nature – Single images (NA) or stories/portfolios (NAS) about the natural world, flora and fauna, landscapes, etc.

The judging of the contest will take place from 28 January until 9 February 2012. The results of the contest will be announced on 10 February in a press conference at the Amsterdam City Hall and online.

Contest Prize & TERMS

PRIZE DETAILS: The jury gives first, second and third prizes in all categories. First prize winners in each category receive a cash prize of €1,500. The premier award, the World Press Photo of the Year, carries a cash prize of €10,000. The annual Awards Days, a celebration of the prizewinners, takes place in Amsterdam at the end of April. COPYRIGHT: You are the only copyright holder or have been authorized by the copyright holder to submit this material. USAGE RIGHTS: If a photo is selected as the World Press Photo of the Year 2011, the photographer grants World Press Photo permission for its unlimited use for activities under the auspices of World Press Photo, without any remuneration being due.

The photographer grants World Press Photo permission to use prize-winning material in all media, including online, in relation to the contest, the exhibition, the yearbook, and all promotional activities for World Press Photo, without any remuneration being due. This permission is limited to an 18-month period from the announcement of the 2012 awards and is applicable only if the material is selected by the jury.

The photographer grants World Press Photo permission to use material submitted in the contest and selected by the jury indefinitely and without any remuneration being due, in its online archive showcasing the results of previous contests.
